The Geometry of Hand-sewing

a Romance in Stitches and Embroidery From Alabama Chanin and the School of Making

One thing I appreciate about this book is that the stitch illustrations show working with either a left hand or a right hand (that is, from either direction - left or right) and the acknowledgment that one should try the direction(s), including vertical, that work best for you, whether you are left-handed or right-handed. This makes the whole learning process a bit more encouraging. Left-handed people are mostly ignored in embroidery stitch tutorials and illustrations.
