While plenty of contemporary writers pay homage to the golden age of hardboiled fiction (the days of Chandler, Hammett, Cain, JIm Thompson), but Scott Phillips not only sets his book in the time period, but also tries to write in a retro style, with mixed results. As a big fan of noir in film and fiction, I appreciate the effort, but it also felt a bit forced and, really, only James Ellroy, the Demon Dog of Crime Fiction, can pull it off. Still, it's a swift, pulpy read that will appeal to fans of the genre. Phillips also wrote "The Ice Harvest," which was filmed with John Cusack and Billy Boy Thornton.
