Minnow has many mermaid sisters, each of whom have a special talent, sadly, she seems to have none. She is curious though, and nothing can curb her desire to know, especially when, one day, a shoe floats down from the surfaceworld. No one seems to know what it is, and mermaids have no feet, so it is difficult for her to imagine what it could be for. Determined, she heads towards the surface where answers are to be found. Like the story, the illustrations have a wistful elegance to them. The foggy blue-grey colour of the ocean creates the impression of vast depth. In comparison, the upperworld is full of soft, light colours, and sights that fascinate Minnow. In the larger spreads, the artist has drawn exquisite compositions between Minnow and the sea creatures. The Mermaid and the Shoe has the feel of a fairytale because of its art, magical setting, and meaningful lesson. Everyone has a special quality. By following her curiosity, Minnow finds her true calling.
