Ox was twelve when his daddy taught him a very valuable lesson. He said that Ox wasn't worth anything and people would never understand him. Then he left. Ox was sixteen when he met the boy on the road, the boy who talked and talked and talked. Ox found out later the boy hadn't spoken in almost two years before that day, and that the boy belonged to a family who had moved into the house at the end of the lane. Ox was seventeen when he found out the boy's secret, and it painted the world around him in colors of red and orange and violet, of Alpha and Beta and Omega. Ox was twenty-three when murder came to town and tore a hole in his head and heart. The boy chased after the monster with revenge in his bloodred eyes, leaving Ox behind to pick up the pieces. It's been three years since that fateful day-and the boy is back. Except now he's a man, and Ox can no longer ignore the song that howls between them.

This book is a really fun read that made me laugh out loud and tear up in multiple places. It's romantic, dramatic, and exciting. The characters stick with you and the plot is intriguing and keeps you coming back for the other parts in the series. Very LGBTQ positive! My only complaint is there is the age gap between the two main characters was a little uncomfortable for me initially, however there is a time jump in the book after which point the age gap doesn't feel relevant/concerning anymore.

This is not a great book, but it is somehow fascinating and it is certainly different. It's many things. A nice tale of a simple young man coming of age, a horror story, a love story, sort of a gay romance, an action story. It's just all over the map. I could not wait to pick it up again, so it is entertaining, but I think this writer has more imagination that an actual talent for a cohesive story.

Quite possibly the slowest burn *ever*, but totally worth seeing through to the end. Like many of Klune's books, there's relatively little sex, and nothing particularly explicit.
