Rand's hero is Howard Roark, a brilliant young architect who won't compromise his integrity, especially in the unconventional buildings he designs. Roark is engaged in ideological warfare with a society that despises him, an architectural community that doesn't understand him, and a woman who loves him but wants to destroy him. His struggle raises questions about society's attitude toward revolutionaries. Since this book's publication in 1943, Rand's controversial ideas have made her one of the best-selling authors of all time.

The worst book I have ever tried to read. The characters are tortured souls, and so was I, as I was dragged through their wretched lives. I do not care what statement she was trying to make, those are lost hours I am never getting back in my life.

Regardless of what shiny and new philosophical ideas Rand weaves throughout her novel, most of her characters lead depraved lives. Period. And it is was quite annoying to reach the end of this time-consuming piece after hours of listening to character development and the explanation of why they commit the acts they do, only to be left feeling like I'd spent two weeks as a juror in some sweltering town on the equator-line listening to the dull tale of an architect and his dishonourable acquaintances and all their troubled affairs.
