Wyoming's new governor isn't sure what to make of Joe Pickett, but he has a job for him that is extremely delicate. A prominent female British executive never came home from the high-end guest ranch she was visiting, and the British Embassy is pressing hard. Pickett knows that happens sometimes--these ranches are stocked with handsome young cowboys, and "ranch romances" aren't uncommon. But no sign of her months after she vanished? That suggests something else. At the same time, his friend Nate Romanowski has asked Joe to intervene with the feds on behalf of falconers who can no longer hunt with eagles even though their permits are in order. Who is blocking the falconers and why? The more he investigates both cases, the more someone wants him to go away. Is it because of the missing woman or because he's become Nate's advocate? Or are they somehow connected? The answers, when they come, will be even worse than he'd imagined.

I enjoyed this uncomplicated, compact plot with just a handful of characters. It's a mystery story with a game warden as the detective who sets out to find out what happened to a well known wealthy woman who was visiting a guest dude ranch in Wyoming, but just seemed to disappear after her week long visit. It's a plot about a disappearance, not a murder mystery. The only things that get killed are animals and birds. The setting is winter time with plenty of descriptions of snow storms, piles of snow, bad road conditions, and the need for warm clothing to block out the freezing temperatures. It's a "cool" read on a summer day. The author does include environmental issues of concern to citizens in that area of the US. I would read another book by this author.

I've read a lot of his books and I really enjoyed this one. The story line was interesting, the pace was good and his descriptions of the cold Wyoming Winter and landscapes make you feel like you're there. His Joe Pickett character is well developed and is a strong, smart family man and Nate is always an interesting addition.

This is another serviceable novel in the Pickett series, and has all the usual characters, a few stories and some education, too. I will read any C J Box novel, although he is not spectacular. Over the years, his character has remained true to his roots, but always open to learning. The tapestry of Wyoming is also a character in his work. Fans of C J Box will not be disappointed.

Another great Box read. C.J. Box never fails to deliver. One of the best suspense writers today.

This was one of C.J. Box's better ones! A good "Joe Pickett" mystery, fast paced and full of interesting new characters and some old ones, including the quirky Nate. The storyline also weaves in some very current issues such as the environmental impact of wind turbines.

This was a disappointing read. I found myself skipping pages to get to somewhere interesting. I was also able to put down the book and leave it for another day, something that never happened with Box's other books. The story didn't have any oomph and it felt like a goodbye to Joe Pickett.

This is the 18th book in the excellent series about Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett. You may not think that a game warden leads a very interesting life, but Joe Pickett certainly does! In Wyoming, at least, game wardens are part of law enforcement, and Joe often gets involved in criminal investigations that go far beyond the scope of usual game warden duties. Every book has a compelling plot, and the characters are well developed.

The primary plot of this book seems to be about a British woman executive who came to a posh dude ranch in WY and then mysteriously disappeared on the way to the Denver airport to return home. Is her disappearance involuntary? Or did she just decide she could not go back?

But other people in the book are “disappeared” as well, with no obvious explanation.

One of the best reasons to read this particular book is to have a better understanding of “wind farms” and their true impact on the environment. Spoiler alert: They are not nearly as green as you have been led to believe.

This is such a good book that I am sorry to tell you that you really should read the entire series in order before reading this one. This series builds on the prior books more than most. But the good part is that all of the books in this series are very good! Even if you think you do not care about Wyoming, game wardens, etc., I can guarantee you will love this series! (And there is another advantage to starting with book #1; by the time you finish all of the books, the next one should be out.)

THE DISAPPEARED by C. J. Box is one his best Joe Pickett novels yet. I completely get what other reviewers are saying about it taking awhile to get to the main action. But to me, what was going on was interesting and weird enough to keep me engaged, and it was necessary background to seeing how things wound up in the end. Box keeps you guessing about who did what to whom and exactly what is going on. He also does a masterful job of setting up his next book. What happens to Joe now that he has been picked up by the state police? Good thing he has a good lawyer. And what happens to Sheridan's love-of-her-life romance? The cliff looms! Or does it?

This is book 18 so Joe Pickett, family and friends are well established.

It's January and the new governor sends Joe to Saratoga to temporarily replace Steve Pollock who suddenly left the job. A famous British PR Head, Kate Shelford-Longden, has been missing since July 30 when she left the Silver Creek Ranch without a trace. Joe is supposed to find Kate fast yet Steven's report is oddly incomplete. Joe's eldest daughter, Sheridan(now 23), happens to be a wrangler at the exclusive ranch resort. The area is being taken over by a massive wind farm company and Nate's falconer group is protesting the damage to the eagles and other large birds.
Slugging through deep snow and bitter cold, Joe manages to solve a lot of problems only to find himself left with a pile of problems of his own, including being fired by Governor Colter Allan when things don't go the governor's way.

We are left hanging as to Joe's final fate...
