Delius as I Knew HimeBook - 2013
Frederick Delius was an English composer who formally studied music in Germany, and was influenced by African American music. He contracted syphilis during his early years in Paris, and the symptoms eventually lead to him becoming paralyzed and blind. However, he managed to complete some compositions with the aid of an amanuensis (in this case, essentially a transcriber), Eric Fenby, himself a composer, pianist, and conductor. This was a stressful situation due to Delius's difficult temperament and atheism (Fenby had recently converted to Catholicism), as well as difficulties in communicating and Delius's deteriorating health. Fenby wrote Delius As I Knew Him as an account of this experience.
