Amid the social upheaval of the Vietnam War era, a young cadet at a southern military college must face down a racist secret society. As Will McLean begins his studies at the Carolina Military Institute, antimilitary sentiment is raging and the American South is in turmoil over desegregation. An outsider to the harsh authoritarianism of the military, McLean survives his freshman year despite the school's notorious hazing, and avoids attention from its fabled and menacing secret society, the Ten. But when he becomes the mentor of the school's first black student, Will is drawn into the intense racial politics - and the simmering threat of violence - that lie just beneath the surface at the Institute. Featuring Conroy's lush prose and richly drawn characters, The Lords of Discipline is a powerful story of a young man's stand for justice and the friendship, love, and courage that he finds along the way.

I had to read this book as a class assignment. At first i wasn't too excited. But let me say, this is one of my favorite books ever. The story grabbed my attention and, unlike other books, actually kept me wanting to read more. I fully recommend reading this book!

Will remain one of my favorite books for a lifetime- Conroy creates a world so complete with complex character development that is almost so good it's frightening. I enjoy every page he writes. This book is a perfect mix of mystery, romance, history, and autobiography. I would read it a million times over and never get bored- the writing style of Conroy is underrated.. He is truly brilliant, and the history/reality of The Citadel that is offered in this novel is wonderful.

One of my favourite books. This is one worth lingering over. Really well written and one of Conroy's best, in my opinion.
This book gets very dark in places, and takes the reader on an emotional ride.
