Couldn't finish. Unique ideas but took way too long to paint the world. Plus I couldn't really get into the prose and style

Holy heck this is brilliant.

I wasn't expecting to read this as quickly as I did, but the story pulled me in and didn't let go until it spat me out the other side, at which point I immediately put the next two on hold.

The story itself is almost deceptive in its pacing (at least for me) because at no time did I actively feel rushed or like there was a next sequence to get to quickly so I could find out what happens next. And yet, when I read the last word, it hit like a ton of bricks.

As well as having an intriguing story line, Palmer is also playing with ideas. The amount of philosophy and theology that gets discussed is one of the things I love about it, and it flows beautifully in the overall storytelling in way I haven't seen often and thoroughly enjoy.

Too Like the Lightning is a wonderful combination of thought provoking Science Fiction, intrigue, and philosophy, and I highly recommend it!

Revelatory world-building: this novel belongs on every list of best world-building in SF! A near-perfect blend of scifi & philosophy. It's intellectually vigorous & challenging, stylistically unique, with a sprawling cast of compelling characters in complex political relationships. This is visionary work. But it's also one of those clever ideas that never lets you forget how clever it is. The unique writing style never quite stops feeling like a gimmick. It achieves greatness but tries a bit too hard to get there. Hopefully the author's next book will be a bit less self-conscious, more truly confident in itself.

This is one of the best science fiction books I've read! Highly recommended.

If you read this book without knowing anything about the author, you might still be able to guess that she's a professor of history and also an avid science fiction fan. Flying cars! A moonbase! Entire pages of dialogue in Latin! (Translations provided). It's dense, meaty, and brain-engaging, and I want the sequel immediately.
