Commissario Brunetti is as congenial as ever.

From the title to the last paragraph, this is among the most devastating of the Brunetti series. The underlying crime is not as simple as it appeared, in large part because the victim's family didn't have the strength to (literally) look at the facts before them, even if they had a nagging sense that all was not as it seemed.

As with all Brunetti mysteries, even after the questions are answered, no one feels that justice is possible. This one, however, does leave the reader with a bit of hope for life after the end.

Tried to read it, but got bored.

A rather boring read. A Venice aficionado might enjoy it.

This is really a story about the family and life in upper class Venice. The crime is quite simple and a not very challenging crime. Still one of the best series around.

Finished this book in a day's read. What a title - a good one as it can be interpreted in so many ways, but not the way Leon relates it to her story. Leon has more political and social comments about Venice in this story than perhaps in the others. She weaves them into Brunetti's interaction with his fellow workers and his superiors. These comments add flavor to the setting and I enjoy that aspect of her books. Brunetti seems to be tiring of the way the system works, but acknowledging it, he, too, manipulates it to get his way. He can be just as creative in his ideas of getting around the system as his secretary. Leon continues to inform us about the lives of his two children and marriage - everything is "happy families", but there is tension at work when Brunetti is asked by an aging friend of the family to investigate the circumstances surrounding an incident that left her granddaughter disabled.

Donna Leon is back to her best with this latest Brunetti. I had to keep reading..all's well that ends solved. Peace and justice for an elderly lady and her family.

This 25th anniversary Brunetti mystery is sheer perfection. He gains considerable insight into Commisario Griffoni, whom he's know for years and yet knows little about except that she's from Naples. What he learns now helps solve a case that he's not sure is a case until he's involved many of his coworkers. We also see more of Brunetti's family, always a delight, usually at mealtimes, when the food is lovingly described. The story involves many of the dark issues of life in Venice--pollution, corruption, etc, which always arise in these stories. Yet the mood is lighter than in most, as Brunetti and crew bring not just justice, but happiness and peace to several beleaguered people.

Donna Leon has achieved a new depth of profundity & inspiration with this 'cold case' in which murder is not the primary focus, but instead the essence of humanity. Leon has tackled an aspect of consciousness that called for her most thoughtful portrayal of an innocent victim, and what justice can be given to someone whose life seems to have lost all meaning & ultimate worth.

Manuela Lando-Continui, a woman who suffered a near drowning when 15, lives at 30 with the mind of a 7-year-old. Her grandmother, a good friend of Commissario Guido Brunetti's mother-in-law, wants answers to this now 'cold’ case. Did she fall or was she pushed into the canal?
Brunetti is at his best in this one. Manuela is a sympathetic horse-loving girl and he has help from his fellow Commissario Claudia Griffoni to solve the case this time. One of Leon’s best.
