"The extraordinary new novel in the New York Times-bestselling author's acclaimed series about the real Deep South--"a joy ride into the heart of darkness" (The Washington Post). She was just seventeen, a high school dropout named Milly Jones, found walking down the middle of the highway, engulfed in flames. Even in a tough Mississippi county like Tibbehah, it shatters the community, and it is up to Sheriff Quinn Colson, back on the job after a year away, and his deputy Lillie Virgil, to investigate what happened and why. Before long, however, accusations start to fly, national media and federal authorities descend, and what seemed like a senseless act of violence begins to appear like something even more disturbing--with more victims waiting in the shadows"--Provided by publisher.

While I plowed through this with continuing annoyance, I wouldn't recommend it. It's not well written. You can foresee the horrible "secret" withheld until the end coming from long ahead of the moment when it arrives, and even then it's rather obviously nicked from contemporary events, and it's not well done. The colloquial dialects written into characters of a certain geographic area don't match with the vernacular of the area. In some places the writer obviously didn't bother checking facts before peppering in pop culture references to song titles or performers. If you get a chance to read this, pass.

I enjoy all things Southern so this was fun to read. The characters were well drawn and the beginning of the plot compelling. I found that the solution to the mystery was too evident, however, and the book fizzled out in the end. Disappointing, but I would recommend it anyway for a light read.

I agree with the reviewer that this was somewhat disappointing. The plot does move along quickly with Quinn and Lillie searching for Milly's killer. It came to an abrupt ending and an event that would appear to set the stage for the next Quinn Colson novel.
