In 1988 Mexico City, 15-year-old Meche and her only friends, book-loving Sebastian and dreamer Daniela, discover literal magic in Meche’s record collection. They use their newfound powers to raise their social status, but the emotional stresses of magic and adolescence test their friendships to the breaking point. In 2009, Meche returns to Mexico City for the funeral of her father, a radio deejay and washout performer who fed her love of music, and confronts her estranged friends, reopening old wounds.

I came across this book due to a short story she wrote elsewhere and I liked it.
I think this is supposed to be 'magic-realism' but it's not. It's really just a love story with a bit of 'magic' thrown in (well more than a bit but the story/writing just isn't that magical.)
What it is good for is finding music you've not heard of or forgot. That part was fun for me. Quite possibly not for anyone else.

A fun read for music lovers. Three misfit teens explore the magical power of music in this tale of love, regret and finding just the right record to change your life. Cue up Fame by David Bowie!
