This series got off to a really good start but now I find it has bogged down in so much tedious detail that I'm ready to give up on it. The annoyances are (1) the endless exposition where characters are sitting around discussing the political, military, or technological situation on Safehold. We're talking pages and pages and pages of exposition. (2) the battles, which are described in tedious technical detail and more often than not feature secondary or disposable characters. In the end, these battles don't really advance the plot, but you get to learn about how much gunpowder you need to put into a claymore mine and other such trivia. The end result is that at nearly 600 pages, the actual story plot advances at a glacial pace because so much of the book ends up being filler. And don't even mention the spelling of names which makes keeping track of those characters just about impossible. Please, Dayhvid Zwheber, get an editor to cut this stuff down!

This series is really excellent. While the pace slows down in this book as opposed to the previous couple, it's done for a valid reason. We get to know a few characters a little better than we did before, and get introduced to a few new (and old) ones too.

I expect we'll get an action packed payoff for all we know of the the commanders in south, not to mention for the rulers of Corisande, in the coming books. (just judging from the pacing Weber has shown in other series)

While I am a fan of the Safehold series by David Weber, I am disappointed by this latest addition. It has endless dialogue but the events it chronicles do not seem to advance the plot much if at all. Compared to the first book of the series Off Armaggedon Reef, the book moves very slowly and is very much less rewarding. I would hope David Weber stops trying to milk the series for income and gets back to good story telling.
