This is the follow up book to Ten Birds by Cybele Young. In this book, the ten birds come across the shadow of a monster. They use a roomful of clothing in inventive way to create their own monsters in hopes of scaring the monster away. But it is the bird that is "easily distracted" who wanders off and realized the shadow is nothing more than a glove sitting in the next room.

This book has abstract concepts. It is advertized for grades K-3 which is appropriate. However it is a counting book and this age of children know their numbers so then the book becomes about ingenuity and finally the message that looking for the simplest answer is often the best.

The drawings are absolutely beautiful and finely detailed. The author uses made up words like Vicious Polka-dactyl to describe the monster creations.

Using this book as a counting book would not work well as the birds become hidden within the clothing and are difficult to see. The monsters they create are extremely abstract. I would recommend this book as one in which to enjoy the fine drawings and the abstract monster concepts.
