Having visited Spinalonga this book was on point with the description of the environment and it was so easy to visualise the environment.
I would have liked a different ending but I enjoyed the intertwining family stories.

Victoria Hislop is my favorite writer so far, and her books are gloomy and amiable at the same time. The Island is her maiden work and it amazed me so much that I still think about it from time to time. The book consists of several stories carried on by three generations in one family, all related to leprosy somehow. Just like Victoria’s other books, The Island doesn’t have descriptions of anything big, remarkable or extraordinary. Instead, it is the closeness to life and simplicity in her words that give me a deep understanding of the characters and make me resonate with them. For me, The Island is a sad song, a dark chapter of the fight against disease, but also a paean of determination and forgiveness, a monument of the love in humanity. 5/5 Stars. @Vayne of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

Thoroughly enjoyed this, and learned a few things at the same time!

Victoria deserves every award she has received for her books. Loved this saga of several generations, could not put it down, became so involved with their lives, thoughtfully developed plot, real people, well researched history.

I believe that this is what people talk about when they say "beach read' enjoyed the book. Had a nice pace, and a nice story with a good amount of secrets unearthed to keep you interested. Not a huge fan of the ending, but a nice read anyway.

I found the first 56 - 60 pages slow but then the book became very enjoyable. I was sorry to finish it, wish it kept going.
