This novel was incredibly sad. It’s still a beautiful read, just not as triumphant as say, Practical Magic.
If you enjoy the lyrical writing and mystical connection to nature in Hoffman's books, I recommend The Poet's Secret by Kenneth Zak. He writes with the same beautiful prose and immerses the reader into his story's beautiful setting. His poetry at the beginning of each chapter is incredible, also.
Once again the master of magical realism has written a lyrical, alluring and highly suspenseful novel. A private school in a small town in Massachusetts is the setting for a story of love, murder and the scent of roses so strong it makes young girls faint.
Rated a NY Times Bestseller - reminds me that being a best seller doesn't guarantee quality writing. The narration would shift mid-paragraph as would tenses making it hard to follow in some places. The plot was OK, but predictable and sad from start to finish - great coverage of bullying though if you're a parent or teacher.
Tense and riveting thriller.
